When greed stifles opportunity

America’s wireless economy demonstrates the best and the worst in the American business landscape. True, we have some of the best communications infrastructure in the world. A base that served us very well in the twentieth century. And yes, I did mean the twentieth century.
As we move forward in the twenty-first century, we are seeing a growing requirement for always on, immediately recoverable communications systems. The advent of high availability systems and their distribution into business and everyday life is driving these new requirements. Perhaps the most relevant example is our financial industry, where online processing and ATM’s require communications networks to be available in order to provide even a basic level of operation. Is the FCC re-issuing wireless licenses before Obama gets in?

If I were to try to convert this to layman’s terms, the CTIA is petitioning to change cellular licensing with the FCC to more accurately reflect geographic market areas. What they are actually requesting is re-issuance of spectrum licenses. This looks like an attempt to get to a contract that more accurately reflects what the incumbents would like as opposed to the original license intent of the FCC that is not being enforced. One of the benefits of this change is protecting “incumbent” cellular licensees from interference from potential new entrants.
